Tata Motors

Tata Motors is a part of the Tata and Sons Group, founded by Jamshetji Tata and J. Baker.

The company has its roots in the manufacture of locomotives. This continued until in 1954, the director finally decided to expand the company’s area of interest to the commercial vehicle sector.

Tata Motors started its commercial vehicle operations in 1960 by manufacturing small commercial vans and trucks for use by the small businesses of the area. They had good practicality and soon the brains at the top of the company decided to apply their new knowledge of automobiles to private cars for sale to the general public.

In recent years, they have entered the European dominated market of passenger cars. The made a small hatchback in 1993 which was enormously successful in the Indian market. Their cars combine simplicity with a certain style, identifiable only to Indian cars. They are small for the cluttered streets and robust to withstand the shunts they will inevitably take.

They have since teamed up with a Brazilian bus building company who supply buses and coaches all over the world under the name, Marcopolo SA. The team now plan to develop and build modern buses to pitch to government and private transport companies all over the world in the hope of an increased client base. Tata have the correct knowledge of the engineering involved and the Brazilians will bring their expertise in body work and interior to the fore in this joint venture.

Their most recent success has been the ‘Ace’, which is acclaimed as India’s only truck to fall below the one ton mark. This has so far been a huge success since its release in May of 2005. The ventures of Tata seem to be getting more ambitious, and that is a good thing. They are entering more and more into the commercial stream of things once again.
