Suzuki

The company was founded by Michio Suzuki in 1909 as Suzuki Loom Works. By the 1950s, its focus had expanded beyond just loom machines to include both motorcycles and automobiles. In 1955, it rolled out the Suzulight, a compact car that proved to be a harbinger of a new era of Japanese lightweight vehicles. The following years for Suzuki were filled with success with moth their cars and motorcycles being loved by the public market.

The 70s seen Suzuki produce models like the ‘Jimmy’ which were also successful, especially considering the decades oil crisis.

The 1980s saw Suzuki partnering with General Motors -- GM acquired a 5 percent stake in the company. GM made this move partially in response to the growing popularity of subcompacts in the U.S. market; after the purchase, Suzuki products were re-badged and sold as GM vehicles in America.

In 1985, they launched an American branch and for the first time, Suzuki cars became widely available there.

A 1988 court case against a magazine for a bad publicity article which Suzuki eventually won made for bad publicity, which is something that Suzuki are only now recovering from. . By the end of the decade they had sold over 10 million units.

During the '90s, Suzuki expanded its reach to include territories like Egypt, Vietnam and Hungary, and launched new models like the Cappuccino convertible and the lightweight Wagon R. They released the Esteem which was available in the U.S., replaced the Samurai with the X-90.

In 2004, Suzuki’s success allowed them to purchase Daewoo and to further enhance their market success Today's Suzuki’s are the second choice to many, but with economical difficulties where people need a more affordable choice, perhaps the future looks bright for Suzuki.
