In the1950s, a group of Japanese companies joined together to pull all their resources. This collaboration formed the Subaru company as we know it today. In 1954 the first Subaru car was unveiled to the public. It was powered by a four-cylinder engine, the P-1 (its name was later changed to the Subaru 1500). Sales were suspended due to challenges associated with funding and support, but Subaru soon resolved its difficulties and produced the 360 was introduced in 1958. Dubbed the Ladybird because of its ladybug shape, this car was great in terms of sales and remained on the market for a further 12 years.
The 60s was also a good decade for the company, they began to manufacture trucks which again increased their sales and popularity. With all of this success under their belt the company followed suits of companies like Datsun and decided to export their vehicles to the U.S.
The company continued to produce popular cars in the 1980s which are said to have been different in looks to other cars of that era. It was this design flare which was responsible for Subaru’s success in the U.S. They also began to use more technology such as a new electronically controlled gearbox.
The also made a good name for themselves by winning the World Rally 3 times in a row in the 90s and also continued to use increasing amounts of tech. This kept media and public interest in the companies new offerings year after year. Their success on the track also improved sales of the Impreza in the public market
Today their legacy is for offering Japanese performance with style and reliability. They are also under going an ad campaign including offering ‘a new boxer diesel engine’.
