Smart

Smart began in 1993 as a joint venture between Daimler-Benz and Swiss watchmaker Swatch, creating a company known as Micro Compact Car AG headquartered in Biel, Switzerland.
Its "city cars" would feature the build quality and reliability of Mercedes-Benz, while Swatch would contribute its funky design philosophy to attract the younger generations. The resulting two-passenger Smart City-Coupe was designed for a European urban environment, the company prides itself on fuel economy and practicality. The City-Coupe could theoretically be able to park perpendicular in a parallel-parking spot.

The company then introduced safety measures to combat any potential collision with a bigger vehicle after concerns were raised about the size. This included a three different materials bound together to create reinforced body and chassis.

Daimler-Benz bought Swatch out shortly after the introduction of the City-Coupe. Since then they have received immense success in the market with their image of funky eco cars taking hold in the market.

More than 770,000 units have been sold in over 36 countries. The size increased slightly with future models and the automatic gearbox was criticised by some journalists. The biggest news, however, was that Smart would be expanding into the United States, where rising gas prices had shifted the market toward smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles. Their move to the U.S. market is being watched eagerly for results.
