Rolls-Royce
A partnership was formed in 1906 to form a luxury car company which would become well known around the world for producing fabulous luxury vehicles with great reliability and attention to detail at the top of the builders list. They had just one factory and like many auto makes, had a humble beginning. Their first car, ‘Gost’, was an instant success and was declared ‘the best car in the world’.
During the '20s, the automaker acquired a second factory in Springfield, Massachusetts to help keep up with rising demand; the factory remained open for 10 years. The '20s also saw the launch of the Phantom I, which was powered by a cutting edge engine for its time.. In 1931, they bought Bently, and they combined their engineering abilities to enhance build quality and design.
The 1940s seen the growth of RR with the opening of new factories and the improving of their existing models to keep up with the times.
Rolls-Royce unveiled its Phantom IV in 1950. Powered by eight-cylinder engine, the car held the honour of being the most exclusive Rolls ever. Only 18 were made, all of which were delivered to royalty and heads of state. The '50s also saw the debut of the king-sized Silver Cloud I and Silver Cloud II. The 1960s saw the introduction of the Silver Cloud III, Silver Shadow and Phantom VI. Rolls Royce were starting to gather momentum in the car market.
The 70s were tough for RR, they had an engine contract fail and had to be nationalised by the British Government. They had almost disappeared into the history books.
In the 1980s, they released cars such as the silver spirit and had marginal success. However, Rolls changed hands yet again in the '90s. Vickers (Who had purchased them in the 80s) put the marque up for sale, Volkswagen bought the marque after out-bidding BMW. The two German automakers then came to an agreement and arranged for VW to relinquish control of the Rolls-Royce name on January 1, 2003, with VW keeping Bentley and the Crewe plant. BMW have since built a 100 million dollar plant in the UK for the Rolls Royce.
RR are now at the top of the luxury car market and seem set to remain there with financial backing from BMW.
