Mercedes-Benz
They’re big, they’re fast, they’re safe, and the pope has one. Mercedes-Benz is one of the world’s most known cars, especially when it comes to luxury and sports cars. Although the company has taken a dip in the SUV and MPV pool. Located in Germany and officially founded in 1927 (although a company called Mercedes made cars almost half a decade before hand) the Mercedes has seen a dramatic change in its style, engineering and ownership, although a couple of things have always remained the same, luxury and quality.
The Mercedes Benz Type 300 of the 1950s can be seen as the equivalent to any of today’s luxury cars because it really set the pace for decades to come. The spacious six seat car was available in both a sedan and a cabriolet. A three liter engine and a four speed gearbox came as standard in 1951 when the car was first launched. Features included a telephone, Becker radio and even a writing desk long with curtains and an optional dividing partition. The production of the original ran until 1955 when Mercedes decided it was time for a change. For the rest of the cars production many different bodies came and went such as the limousine version and adjustments to the front en. To take a look at some of these cars for sale click here. The 300’s production finally came to an end in April of 1958 although many other Mercedes-Benz cars have displayed a 300 logo such as their sports car, the 300 SL.
The Mercedes 123 which was another of Merc’s defining cars took the shape of many of the Mercedes that we see from the 70s, 82 and 90s, a right-angled body, triangular grille jutting out and prominent turn-signals. This car was available in a sedan and also in an estate version. Power steering became standard on these models from 1982. Better handling only complimented the 2.0L and above engines fitted to all 123s. North-American 123s differ slightly from their European counter-parts, some notable differences include larger American bumpers, emissions control devices and round beam/fog lights.
In modern terms, the best Mercedes-Benz has to be the new S-class. This new version started production in 2005. We see the modern Benz features on this model at their greatest with headlamps stretched back with the contours of the body, sleek bodywork and a powerful engine that is available up to 6.0L. Also available is a hybrid version which can run on petrol/diesel and electricity. Some safety features include brake assist, sensors which can predict when you are going to collide with something and apply the brakes faster that humanly possible and night viewing assistant using infra Red technology and an image is displayed on the instrument panel. Also included is a powerful stereo for entertainment, luxury interior including leather seats, and stylish trim. The S-class is available here.
