Ligier

Ligier motors is a French auto manufacturer which was formed in 1968 by a former racing driver by the name of Guy Ligier. They began by building basic but well designed racing cars as soon as they were founded. The company has been kept afloat over the years by means of 21 investment partners and are currently still producing small numbers of cars year in year out.

Their first car was powered by a V6 Maserati engine and was named the JS2. It was acclaimed for its good power to weight ratio and for its good interior and seating position in particular. The cars production continued to increase until the 1970s oil crisis took its tool on the small company and ceased its production.

After the crisis, the firms bosses decided that they needed to change tactics. To combat the rising oil prices and the bad image that came with gas guzzling cars, they began to manufacture micro-cars which were powered by fuel saving tiny engines adapted from mopeds.

Their racing history has been good in respect of other manufacturers but has mostly been sporadic and short-lived. For example, the company’s Formula 1 car the JS43 won the 1996 Monaco Grand Prix, but only once.

This good production rate continued right up until 2008 when the company successfully bought the micro car division of Beneteau Group. The news of wither this will be a success for the company is still yet to be seen.
