Lancia
Lancia was founded on 29 November 1906 in Turin by Vincenzo Lancia and his friend Claudio Fogolin, both of whom were both Fiat racing drivers. They first produced a 58hp four cylinder car which would adopt the name of Alfa in subsequent years.
They’re market was generally confined o Europe in the early days. They received good press from being an innovative company with fresh ideas and ways of thinking. They introduced a new standardised electrical system to all their cars in 1913 with the inclusion of a connecting wiring-loom, were the first European manufacturer to use the monococque body type and to use independent suspension which meant that each wheel has its own suspension unit consisting of a spring and a hydraulic damper rod. The 1948 after WW2, they introduced a five speed gearbox to be fitted to the Ardea 3. This car also had the first full scale production of a V6 engine. During the 50s and 60s they also used V8s and even V12s.
Their success in motor sport has also contributed to their success, especially during the 70s and 80s. They proudly hold the titles of 1972 winner of the International Rallying Championship for manufacturers, and winning subsequent WRC championships such as in 1987. Thye have also been said to have been “ most successful individual model designation ever to compete in rallying”.
However the company entered a period of demise after the early 90s, by failing to keep up to date with design for the public. Since then, the company hasn’t been seen in full operation and is yet to be even talked about in the context of a possible revitalisation of the marquee.
