Lada

Lada is the trademark of AvtoVAZ, a Russian car manufacturer in Togliatti, Samara Oblast. The company name of Lada was only used in all countries as of recent. They used to be refered to as AvtoVAZ or simply ‘VAZ‘. They were also associated with the gloomy image of Russian communism force during the Cold War era and have never really recovered from this. Their very desig were always an issue, with rust and general reliability problems plaguing the company almost since day one.

Their most successful is the Lada Estate. It is based of the design of the legendary Fiat 124 and borrowed many of its engineering aspects also. This car has been praised for its utter simplicity, and said to be a DIY mechanics car, simply because seemingly complex jobs such as engine builds or electrical problems are easily tackled by even the most unwitting of drivers. Its success came from its price as an export and its lack of competition on the USSR home market due to the strict reign of communism there. For this reason, thousands of Ladas are still to be seen around Russian and the eastern bloc, especially in countries such as Estonia.

After the fall of communisim in 1990 and the destruction of its economy because of the transistion to democracy, Russia had to compete against the tougher Western markets and makers such as the US and France. Lada has been acclaimed with some of Russia’s revitalisation since the fall of communisim there. The Lada’s export and production abrod brought back billions to the Russian economy and helper her get back on her feet.

Most recently, the French manufacturer Renault have announced their plans to purchase 25% of Ladas assets for a sum of $1 billion. This move will see an increase in the production of Ladas on Russian ground. Prior to this deal, Lada has also resisted the competition of the influx of western models onto Russian soil. Their future looks bright with future investment on its way.
