DeLorean

John DeLorean first entered the motor industry in the 50s working for Packard. During the following years, he moved around from manufacturer to manufacturer. Ford was growing and that was worrying the bosses, so they transferred him to the Chevrolet. Chevy had record sales of more than three million cars and trucks. DeLorean was promoted to vice president of GM with a $650,000 a year income.

He had then gained enough experience to realise his dream of building his own sports car. By 1979, the DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) was started with a factory being constructed in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Because of the poor workforce due to the religious and political conflicts between the British Security forces and paramilitary groups such as the Irish Republican Army, the quality of the cars was brought into question. This led to the establishing of quality checking stations to make sure the cars were safe and roadworthy.

The DeLorean DMC-12 was made famous mostly by the "Back to the Future" movies where it starred as the "time machine". Exactly 8583 DeLoreans were built in the factory in Belfast, Northern Ireland between the model years of 1981 and 1983. They were well received all over the world and still enjoy immense success today even though the company has shut.

Delorian had intended to sell his new car for around 12,000 dollars, but with production costs mounting, he had to settle for more than double that price in the showrooms. However, for that price tag, you got a stunning sports car that was actual one of the safest of its kind around, mainly down to foam padding between panels and a rugged structure.

Today, there are plans to begin production of the legendary car all over again in Houston.
