David
David is thought to be from a Hebrew word meaning "beloved". David was the second of the great kings of Israel, ruling in the 10th century BC. Many stories about him are told in the Bible's Old Testament, including perhaps his most famous, that of his defeat of Goliath, the giant. This name has been used in the UK since the Middle Ages. It is especially popular in Wales, where it is used to honour the 5th-century patron saint of Wales, as well as in Scotland, where it was the name of two kings. Famous Davids include David Beckham, David Dickinson, David Dimblebee and David Coulthard.
