Daimler
Daimler motor company was founded in Britain in 1896. The enjoyed periods of success and failure with ever mounting pressure from the continental cars. The company is often examined for its key role in establishing British motoring history and industry firmly on its feet at the turn of the century. Confusingly enough, the origins of the company’s name can be traced back to the same person, who gave his name to two companies, the other being a German car manufacturer. This is down to his patent for the design of the engines used by both companies for some time.
Since the company’s foundation they have released multiple models, some more successful than others. For example, their Drophead Coupé, released in 1921 was very successful. This car was a showcase for Daimler’s attention to detail and curvy styling throughout their models. Many were used for family road trips, and some by the rich and famous.
After a period under the wing of BSA, Jaguar and British Layland took over the dwindling company and began to show the world what Daimler could do. Their 1970s Sovereign model was a stunning car. It had a luxurious interior with plenty of optional extras. However, what is more stunning is the exterior. The design can be said to be like that of modern luxury cars, most notably Jaguar. The round headlights frowning towards the ground and the wide but low front with a wide grille eating up the ground before it makes for a wonderful car.
Daimler continue to gain from the success and guidance of Jaguar. Despite a three year gap in production, they came back in 2005 with the Super Eight. They have enjoyed success with this model, however because they have only recently returned, the success of Daimler remains to be seen.
