The Daihatsu brand is now almost over one hundred year sold, making it one of the oldest Japanese brands available to the public today. It was formed in 1907 on march the 1st. Since that time, it has gone on to make dozens of successful and unsuccessful models, many of which have been preserved and are still buzzing around today. Toyota has over half of the company’s shares and takes responsibility for the vehicles’ distribution through North America.

In its infancy, Daihatsu’s main market base was that of Asia. Primarily Japan, however they also enjoyed some success in other neighbouring countries such as Taiwan. In recent years, the company has extended it’s market through heavy investment in to the American and European.

Despite expanding it’s market in some areas, the company has scaled back or got rid of distribution to some areas. Most notably, these include Australia in 2005 and is scaling back it’s interest in Chile, however Toyota has insisted that it will persist in the country.

Since its foundation, they have had many notable models, these include the Daihatsu Midget. This was a three wheeled pick-up truck style vehicle and was produced heavily for the Japanese market. Early models had handlebars instead of a steering wheel and were powered by a small engine which made just 12hp. It was successful and was used for a variety of purposes. Its production lasted from 1957 to 1972.
