Asia Motors

Asia Motors were a Korean motor manufacturer who were founded in South Korea just after the bitter conflict in 1965. They were introduced in a gap in the market when many other manufacturers were either too small or crippled by debt to full contracts both commercial and private. The company’s past is known by few outside of South Korea. They had very few exports in their forty year life and concentrated mainly on the Korean home market.

From the outset, the company concentrated on building heavy trucks, 4x4s and jeeps. The main reason for this was because the manufacture, design and production in general of these kind of vehicles is cheaper and quicker than passenger saloons. They didn’t need to many extra stylistic and comfort features and could be quickly engineered using crude methods as they would not be used for family purposes or racing.

There first vehicles were small trucks for small businesses. They made them cheap and affordable in order to attract a good market. Next, the military gave the company a small contract to build armoured jeeps for their army given the deep divides in Korea at the time. This contract would lead onto further contracts in subsequent years.

There most famous vehicle is the Rocsta, later called the Retona. This looks very similar to the ‘JEEP’ styling and has been criticised accordingly for this. Production continued until the company was bought out of the Korean market by Kia. As of present, the company still exists under the name Asia Motors Australia.
