Alan
The meaning of this name is uncertain, although it is though to mean either "little rock" or "handsome" in the Breton language. Alternatively, it may derive from the tribal name of the Alans, a group of people from Iran who migrated into Europe in the 4th and 5th centuries. This was the name of several dukes from the French region of Brittany, and it was though to be introduced to England by Breton settlers after the Norman conquest of 1066.Famous modern bearers include Alan Shearer, Alan Carr, Alan Sugar, Alan Hanson and Alan Titchmarsh.
