AC Cars Group Ltd.

Formerly known as Auto Carriers Ltd. is a British specialist automobile manufacturer and one of the oldest independent car marques founded in Britain. The most recent manufacturing location of AC is Hal Far, Malta but this has now closed.
In one form or another, Ac has been around since the turn of the 20th century, producing their first car under the name of Weller. The company had a good start with quite a few models sold and plenty more ideas hitting the drawing boards. One such idea was that of a very advanced “20hp car at the time, however this idea was blocked by the company’s financial backer who persuaded them to make a small van type vehicle called the Auto Carrier which had just three wheels!. The initials of this new production model would become the eventual initials of the company.

Soon, a new company name was registered called Autocars and accessories. This name would be found to lack in public appeal and would be scraped in the subsequent years. In 1907, a car which can rightly be called the first ever real A.C. was put into production. It was called the AC Sociable. Soon after this came a low slung sports car with a rear mounted gearbox for better weight distribution. A.C. was becoming a well known car company because of their good looks and sounds engineering. Production was to be interrupted at the outbreak of the First World War, but would resume as peace came about across Europe.

Production continued in the following years releasing car after car, most of which were big hits. In 1940 when the Second World War came about, the country was put into full scale war production so A.C. assembly lines ground to a halt. After the war, new gear boxes were released and made standard on many of their cars. These featured Four-Speed capability and good reliability. In 1947, a large government given contract to begin the production of fiberglass bodies to introduce new technology to the British public helped the company considerably in financial terms.

In 1953, The AC Ace which was designed mostly by John Tojeiro was a massive hit and even featured in the world famous Le Mans in 1957 and ‘58. However the company’s most legendary move was to team up with the American car builder, Carol Shelby. Between the two, they used the Ace’s body work and chassis with the Shelby V8 engine to create the famous, AC COBRA. This car would successfully compete in American races, with its main rival being the Chevrolet Corvette.

During the 70s, AC produced other cars such as the super-car style 3000ME which took on many new features of the time including a mid-mounted engine.

However in the following years, especially the 1990s, the company fell on hard times, changed owners three times, and went into receivership twice. When the company announced it was moving to Malta to begin production it seemed like there might just be some hope left, however the dream was short lived when the owner fled Malta over unpaid bills and government debts. However despite its unpleasant death, AC is still recognized as a great line of cars to buy from with dozens of owners clubs around the country sharing their enthusiasm for one of Britain’s greatest ever car manufacturers.
