One may choose to display a plate that depicts a name, a favourite hobby or a word that can be associated with one’s occupation. There are several celebrity examples of this. Sir Alan Sugar owns the highly prestigious registration, AMS 1, which contains his initials, while Linda Lusardi owns LU54 RDY. On the other hand, celebrity chef and TV host, James Martin, chooses to display 6 HEF (chef), which refers to his hobby and profession, while professional boxer, Amir Khan, owns the ideal plate for him: BOX 111G.
Flashy or decorative fonts are not permitted on Car Registration Plates, and only UK national flags are permitted: any other symbols, such as football team logos or religious symbols may not be displayed on private car number plates. The only variant font allowed on cherished number plates (such as HON 5Y) as an option by the regulations is a 3D version of the standard font. The size and spacing of characters on registration plates is also dictated. More information on cherished number plates character spacing is to be found elsewhere on this website.
The popularity of private car registrations is growing in many ways. The number of people buying personal number plates is higher than ever before, and the prices they are paying for top examples are reaching record levels. There is simply no question that we are seeing a real boom in the appeal of cherished numbers, both as an investment and as a fun aspect to car customisation.
