Cherished number plates, such as F59 OWL, consist of a string of letters and numbers which provide a unique identifying mark for each vehicle licensed to use the roads in the United Kingdom. The number plates used to display this identifying registration number have to conform to rigorous standards and specifications to ensure clarity and visibility. Recently the regulations pertaining to the display of DVLA registrations have become more and more exacting as the authorities attempt to combat crime and traffic offences.

Flashy or ornamental fonts are not allowable on Car Registration Plates, and only UK national flags are allowable: any other symbols, such as soccer team logos or religious symbols may not be displayed on private car number plates. The only variant font allowed on cherished number plates (such as F59 OWL) as an option by the regulations is a 3D version of the standard font. The size and spacing of characters on registration plates is also dictated. More information on cherished number plates character spacing is to be found elsewhere on this website.

When choosing a personalised number plate, one must be aware that the selected registration plate must not be newer than the vehicle it is being paired with. This is because a newer plate on an older car would give the impression that the vehicle is newer than it truly is. This applies to all registration numbers that have age-identifiers (introduced in 1963 to today). However, dateless registrations are also available. These are popular because they are concise, extremely scarce, and can be displayed on any car.
