Cherished Number Plates saving the environment

A new idea is being brought in over the pond in the Sierra Nevada to help motorists actually save the environment. The idea is, a slice of the fee they pay for their cherished number plate (or specialty license plates, as they may call it over there), goes to local conservation projects|

To get this project underway they need 7,500 people to pledge to buy their new number plates, at which point it could be California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger himself handing over the cheque.

This is a great idea and one which should be followed in the UK. At present, the DVLA (and hence, the government) make a fortune from the sale of DVLA Number Plates, but nobody really knows where that money goes. It should go directly to environmental projects which help to counteract the carbon emmissions from the cars which bear them.
