Automatic American Number Plate Recognition!

Number plates in Boca Raton

The upmarket community of Boca Raton in Florida is looking to get in on the Automatic Number Plate Recognition act. We've already seen this technology take the UK by storm, and now the US is looking to follow in our footsteps.

Residents want cameras installed that capture the number plates and send them to Department of Homeland Security databases. However, due to an issue of liabilty, the project is currently stalled.

It would cost the community around $45,000, which is considerably less than the $300,000 required to become a gated community, so it's obviously an extremely cost-effective solution, and a no-brainer to most of the residents, especially some who have been robbed of $80,000 of their posessions.

In the post 9/11 world, privacy concerns are on the mind of many Americans, but this seems to be one price worth paying.
