Flag Plates- Are they illegal or not?!
03 November 2008

A news report, which was published by the Daily Telegraph on 24th October, has caused motorists concern as it states that those displaying national flags other than the European Union face fines as they are illegal in the UK. However the DVLA has advised not to take legal action against those who display national flags instead of the European symbol.
The report, published on Friday by the national newspaper, states that motorists who display national flags face a fine of £60, as well as a possible MoT failure. It has been alleged that some have already been fined for having these national flags on their registration plates.
One Registration website claimed yesterday that the national flags on number plates are not illegal. Apparently, the DVLA said in 2001 that the display of a nation flag from within the UK along with the accompanying letters is perfectly legal and shouldn’t be of any worry to road users with these national flags.
Despite DVLA advice, it still remains to be seen whether the Police and other enforcement bodies are to take action.
