Cherished Number Plates News
Irish Number Plate Tagging
28 August 2008

Ireland has decided to replace the tolls on the busy M50 with a new system. This new scheme will work on a tagging system, which is used in some other countries. These tags will cost €2 for those who register with the Irish tagging providers. For those who do not register, it will cost €3 to use the M50.
The Irish national roads authority will use number plate recognition systems on the motorway for those who haven’t registered with the tagging providers.
By providing a cheaper cost for those who have registered, the authorities hope that over 80% of vehicle users register with the tagging system.
The current toll booths will be destroyed along with all the barriers around them. The decision to do this was taken by the Irish national road authority. They bought the contract for the toll roads for nearly £400 million (€500 million). The work is expected to last till the end of October, during which diversions will be in place on the M50 around the tolling section.
