Good luck!
The DVLA hold around six auctions every year, selling cherished number plates, in various locations around the country. These auctions are attended by all the number plate dealers from around the UK and also some private individuals looking to pick up some registration or another. The DVLA release a list of which registrations are going to be sold prior to the auction, so that the dealers and private individuals can make a shortlist of what they will be bidding for.
If you wish to attend the auction, which usually lasts for three days, you will find it an interesting eye-opener into the number plate business. You can either make bids in person where you can sample the thrilling atmosphere of a live auction. Otherwise you can also place bids by phone or through the Internet.
The reason the DVLA hold these auctions is because they hold back the release of some registration numbers as they are the cherished ones which are worth a bit more money than the normal run of the mill registrations. For example they are going to release all the F registrations that were previously unavailable in October 2008.
If there is a particular registration you want that is being released in the DVLA number plate auction and you don’t fancy bidding yourself, you can always ask one of the number plate dealers to do this on your behalf. However there will usually be a bidding fee involved.
There are a couple of auctions left this year. These will be held in the following locations:
24 - 26 September 2008: Haycock Hotel, Wansford, Cambridgeshire
19 - 21 November 2008: Tankersley Manor, Barnsley, South Yorkshire
